Real people, real roles - brought to life in collage-style motion.
The Brief
In collaboration with Symphony Talent, we joined as production partners on an employer brand film for BP, designed to highlight the wide range of roles within the company through vibrant, collage-style animation. The film formed part of a wider campaign encouraging more people to apply for roles within BP.
We were brought in early, giving us the chance to help shape the visual style, storyboard concepts and production plan for the live-action shoot, rather than simply executing a fixed brief. One of the first decisions was how to source our footage. After discussing options with the team, including stock assets and a green screen shoot, we all agreed that filming real people on a green screen would give us the creative control we needed, along with something stock footage couldn't match: real people and real emotion.
The Approach
During the initial stages, we put together mood boards and references to help the team visualise the direction. Once everyone was aligned on the visual style of the collage, cut-out world we were building, we began designing individual frames and assembling an animatic, giving us a guide for timing on each scene and confidence in the overall flow of the narrative before moving into production.
The Craft
The shoot was built around one main actor and ten extras, used throughout the various scenes. We filmed at BP's office location using a three-metre green screen, capturing everything within a single day. With a condensed filming window, the team had to stay efficient and reactive across every scene and every performer.
We handled the shoot end-to-end, including casting, location, kit, safety checks, props, and wardrobe. Real-time previews on set ensured our vision translated smoothly into post-production, and we ran a live test converting green screen footage into the collage-style world there and then, giving the team an immediate sense of how the raw footage would transform in the edit.
With the shoot wrapped, we moved into crafting the animation itself. Carrying the collage-style feel through into the motion was essential, so we wove texture and dynamic movement into every scene. Once we brought everything together in animation, layering in background elements and sound design, the world truly came to life.
