An interactive onboarding film that gives new starters a taste of the KFC culture from day one.

The Brief

There's more to running a business than creating content for customers. Businesses also need a reason to excite their new hires, so KFC set out to answer a simple question: how do you get a new starter hyped before their first day even begins?

KFC wanted to bring its onboarding to life, shifting the focus away from paperwork and towards energy and interactivity, setting the tone from the start. The project began with research. Fauna spent time with restaurant teams, managers and leaders across the business, and heard the same thing again and again: the culture itself was genuinely warm, but the welcome a new starter received depended entirely on which restaurant they happened to walk into.

We were brought in at the conceptual stage, not just to animate the film but to help shape how the narrative was structured through meaningful movement. The underlying problem we needed to solve was making the film genuinely interactive, so every new starter could choose their own route through it, ensuring the experience felt unique, engaging and ownable to them personally.

A taste of culture

KFC is a bold, energetic and playful brand, and we wanted the motion to match that energy, so new starters didn't just learn about the culture but got a real feel for it from the very first frame.

The look and feel Fauna developed was great, giving us plenty to lean into from a motion perspective. It mattered to both teams that the film carried a strong sense of energy and momentum throughout, keeping viewers engaged as they moved through the narrative.

While Fauna's team led the storyboard, they welcomed our input at that stage too, and we looked at where we could elevate individual scenes and bring our motion mindset into the narrative. From there, our job was to carry that momentum through the animation, keeping the pacing tight and propulsive so viewers stayed hooked as the story unfolded.

The Build

As KFC was already using Vimeo, which supports interactive video, it made the most sense to build on that platform rather than developing something more complex from scratch.

During R&D, we ran tests to understand how the platform behaved and to make sure everything would play out as intended. One of the biggest challenges was that Vimeo's interactive layer only accepted cuts at set frames. Left unmanaged, this risked producing ugly transitions between segments. We built the edit around those frame constraints, leaving deliberate response pauses in the sequence so every decision point had a clean landing, then tested repeatedly against the platform until the flow was right.

A continuous track would have broken every time a viewer clicked through, so instead, each section's music starts from nothing and builds, turning every jump into a moment of ambience rather than an abrupt cut. As the viewer approaches a choice point, the music narrows and the screen pulses, gently nudging them towards a decision.

“I've got nothing but praise for OK Social. From our first conversation, they were completely invested in bringing our interactive animation idea to life. They matched our vision with energy, experience, ideas and craft, then levelled it up. An absolute dream to partner with.”
